ABSTRACT

This experiment was conducted during October, 2013 to March, 2014 in the experimental field of Department of Horticulture, Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), Bangladesh. The objective was to evaluate the effect of three planting dates (30 October, 15 November and 1 December) on growth, yield and yield attributes of three broccoli varieties (Premium, BR001 and BR002) under acidic soil condition of Sylhet. The two factors field experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Broccoli planted on 30 October recorded the minimum number of days to first curd harvest (64.77), the tallest plants at harvest (62.76 cm) with denser leaves (17.90), the highest primary curd weight (142.75 g) with increased curd length (11.93 cm), the maximum curd yield of both primary (5.29 t/ha) and secondary (5.24 t/ha). Variety Premium was the earliest in curd initiation (50.33 days) and curd harvest (64.44 days). Premium had the highest number of leaves at harvest (16.07), the maximum primary curd weight (207.59 g) with increased curd length (12.18 cm) and curd diameter (14.28 cm). The highest primary curd yield (7.70 t/ha) and secondary curd yield (4.02 t/ha) of Premium variety out yielded the other two varieties in this experiment. Interaction effect showed that the variety Premium planted on 30 October showed the best performance in primary curd weight (274.13 g), primary curd yield (10.17 t/ha) and secondary curd yield (8.43 t/ha). Therefore, the variety Premium can be recommended to cultivate at 30 October planting date under acidic soil condition of Sylhet.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cervical cancer is the second highest cause of cancer-related mortality in women, and the only sign of this cancer in the early stages is the loss of abnormal cells. Clinical signs of the disease appear only after cancer has reached advanced stages. Conversely, this cancer in precancerous conditions is completely curable and screening with conventional Papanicolaou (CP) has reduced the mortality by 70% but it is also associated with a significant number of false-negative cases (20-50%). In 1996, liquid-based cytology (LBC) method was developed to overcome the disadvantages of the previous method expecting to have good features such as high sensitivity, faster sample preparation, and decreased the rate of inadequate smears.Methods: This descriptive-analytic study was conducted at the Department of Pathology and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, government medical college, Datia for the period of 11 months from April 2018 to February 2019. The study includes total 80 subjects. Total No. of Pap smear examined (both LBC and CPS) are 160.Results: There were statistically significant differences of satisfactory/unsatisfactory rate, smear cellularity, background clarity and detection of endocervical cells, in between liquid based cytology and conventional Pap smear finding (p<0.05). Diagnostic efficacy i.e. sensitivity and specificity of LBC is greater than CPS for evaluation of cervical cytology.Conclusions: Results shows, that LBC may improve the sample's quality, reduce the number of unsatisfactory smear and increases the diagnostic efficacy.

ABSTRACT

An experiment was carried out to study the characteristics of biochar made from rice husk, rice straw, Toria stover and bamboo leaves. Biochar was produced by slow pyrolysis system (300 –4000C). Locally available bio-wastes viz.rice husk, rice straw, toriastover and bamboo leaves were used as raw materials to produce chars. Two samples of feedstock each from 5 development blocks of Jorhat district of Assam were collected, dried and pyrolysed for production of char for their physicochemical properties. Per cent moisture and ash content, bulk density, particle density andporosity of biochars ranged from 3.26 to 4.91%, 3.70 to 24.97%, 0.178 to 0.729 g/cm3, 0.85 to 2.02 g/cm3 and 61.54 to 78.90%, respectively. Pore volume, particle size and specific surface area ranged from 0.83 to 1.15 ml, 310×147 to 350×209 ?m2 and 89.40 to 184.75 m2/g, whereas pH ,EC, CEC, total Carbon varied from 7.74 to 9.46, 0.272 to 1.005 dsm-1, 12.74 to16.68 c mol (p+)/kg and 36.63 to 49.424%, respectively. Porosity maintained significant and positive correlation with pore volume (0.715**) and specific surface area (0.614**). CEC had significant positive correlations with total C (0.583**), total N (0.587**), total K (0.443**) and IAN (0.766**).Percent total N, P, K, and S had their value ranged from 47.27 to 60.07, 0.017 to 0.032, 0.237 to 0.453 and 0.083 to 0.099; while, Ca and Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu and Iodine adsorption number ranged from 1.11 to 5.23 and 0.148 to 1.326 c mol (p+)/kg, 16.65 to 2.91, 30 to 162, 8.6 to 43 mg/kg and 186.64 to 489.77 mg/g of biochar

ABSTRACT

This case control study was carried out on 35 neonates born to pre-eclamptic/eclamptic mothers treated with magnesium sulphate and 35 neonates born to normal healthy mothers. Cases and controls were selected by inclusionexclusion criteria irrespective of body weight and maturity of the babies. Magnesium sulphate administered to mother in study group was according to Pritchard’s intramuscular regime (1984). The cord blood samples were collected just after birth in both study and control group and magnesium level was estimated by calorimetric method. Magnesium level was found to be significantly higher in study group (6.0305±0.08047) than controls (1.916± 0.300; p = 0.0001). There was a significant difference in Apgar scores of study and control group. A negative weak linear correlation was found between cord blood magnesium level and different neonatal parameter like apgar score, birth weight and gestestional age. A weak positive linear correlation was found between magnesium level and neonatal mortality which was also not significant.

ABSTRACT

Repellent properties of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. Syn. Z. alatum Roxb. (Timur), Curcuma aromatica (Jungli haldi) and Azadirachta indica (Neem) oils were evaluated against mosquitoes in mustard (Brassica sp.) and coconut (Cocos sp.) oil base and compared with synthetic repellent. Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) as standard. Timur and jungli haldi afforded better protection in the both the base at all the concentrations. Tepellents in mustard oil gave longer protection time than those in coconut oil. At 0.57 mg/cm2 concentration timur oil gave significantly higher protection both in mustard (445 min) as well as coconut oil (404 min) than the other repellents and DMP.

ABSTRACT

Trials on persistence of repellent properties of N, N-diethyl phenyl acetamide (DEPA), N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET), 3acetyl2(2-6-dimethyl-5-heptenyl)oxazolidine(Citronyl) , dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and N-benzoyl piperidine (NBP) on cloth were conducted against land leeches in evergreen rain and deciduous forests of Assam. Results obtained were compared with volatile oil of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. syn. Z. alatum Roxb (Timur) to evaluate its efficacy as leech repellent. DEPA and DEET were found to be the best. Timur oil was at par with Citronyl and exhibited better results than DMP and NBP.
